  1. How do I pick a martial arts school?

    Excellent Question. Start your serach with an inital consultation.

    To find out whether Syracuse Martial Arts Academy is right for you, call the Academy at (315) 415-0928 or (315) 491-3756. One of our staff members will find a time that is convenient for you to come in for an initial consultation.

    There are many things to take into consideration when choosing the martial arts academy that is right for you.

    The first step is to visit the Academy in person and observe a class to see how the instructors and students interact. Do not get confused by black belt certifications, tournament wins and even martial arts styles. More importantly, your visit gives you the opportunity to experience the Academy's environment and atmosphere, so that you may consider whether you feel comfortabel with the personnel and the facility. While the Academy you finally select may not end up being the closest school to your home, the extra drive can make a world of difference in the outcome of your investment in yourself and/or your child.

    During your initial consultation, we will meet with you to evaluate you or your child's needs, as well as explain all of the programs to you in full detail. In addition, we will answer any questions you may have about the Academy, staff, pricing, and programs. The inital consultation also provides you with an opportunity to see our facility, observe a call, and meet some of the students and office staff.

  2. I've always wanted to try martial arts, but...

    I've always wanted to learn Martial Arts but...

    1. OH, I'm too out of shape right now! -- I'm going to wait until I'm more in shape.

    What? - You're going to wait 'til you get into shape to be in shape? Ah, we know this one all too well, because we've been there ourselves! But... Joining a Martial Arts program is an excellent way to get in shape - sometimes even achieving faster, well-rounded results based upon cross-training all areas of the body. At the Syracuse Martial Arts Academy, our students have varying fitness levels. We've specially designed these programs to allow each student personalized improvement with their unique needs of physical fitness and health - all while doing so at their own pace!

    Did you know that increasing your activity level by joining our program will also provide you with a number of additional benefits? - Yep, it's a fact! Elevated levels of endorphins in the bloodstream after exercise will elevate your mood - period. Trust us, you will experience a boost in your energy levels while dramatically improving how you look and feel!

    2. I am worried that I am too old. It's too late to start now!

    You are never too old to train in the Martial Arts. The main goal of Martial Arts training is self-improvement. Through training, you can achieve not only physical benefits such as coordination, flexibility, strength, stamina, and endurance, but also mental benefits such as: focus, discipline, self control, balance, peace and self-confidence. Additionally, martial arts has been proven to significantly contribute to problem-solving skills. It is never too late to develop yourself and improve on all aspects of your life!

    3. I am SO uncoordinated that I'm afraid I'll make a fool out of myself.

    REMEMBER, EVERYONE HAD TO BEGIN SOMEWHERE! Even us! Yes, the most coordinated person in the class was a beginner at one time with the same fears and apprehensions as you! It's our promise to you that even if you don't believe in yourself or see your own unique potential -- we will! And help you discover and tap into it! Consider us your personal trainer! Er... without the crazy fees!

    WE UNDERSTAND. But, be patient with yourself and don't get frustrated. And don't expect to be perfect! Your body has to learn how to move the way your brain tells it to. Also, remember that you will progress in 100 different areas 1% at a time, instead of in 1 area 100% of the time. It only takes a few weeks to start training your body to move the way you want it to. If you get discouraged, go to your instructor and other students for encouragement.

    4. But I just don't have the money.

    Another 'but'... Listen, consumers will pay for a product that will provide them with the benefits they want. Ask a Black Belt/Sash student how much money they would accept to sell their 'black belt' for, along with the impact that Martial Arts has made on their life! Then, listen to their response...

    Ask yourself this: Would it be worth it to you to walk to your car late at night with a loved one and feel confident that if something were to happen to you, you'd possess the skills to deal with it? Is it worth it for a parent to know that their child is developing self-esteem and self-confidence to help them deal with negative peer pressure? What about helping sculpt perception of their quality of life or contribution to community? -- So, what exactly is it worth for YOU to empower yourself with the necessary skills to handle a confrontation?


    If you don't seem to have the money in your budget, you might just be surprised by ways you can regain those funds by making some minor small changes. Things that we've actually done ourselves, such as cooking at home instead of eating out -or- even making coffee at home instead of buying a daily Starbucks latte! Learn to cut out additional luxury and indulgent expenses for those that ultimately matter and prove life transforming results.


    5. I just don't have the time - too many other pressures right now.

    Sure, it's easy to become overwhelmed with pressure from daily responsibilities - both at work and at home. And it doesn't help to look at exercise as just another burden! WE GET IT! Just as eating, showering and brushing your teeth are part of your daily routine of taking care of yourself, so should exercise be a priority in your life! Joining our program will help you to reduce your stress and prioritize fitness as part of your self-care routine. Additionally, you will receive the following benefits:

    Physical Benefits - coordination, flexibility, strength, endurance.

    Mental Benefits - discipline, focus, self-control, self-confidence.

    The ability to defend oneself and loved ones.

    6. I'm afraid because I don't know anyone else in the class. I'll feel like a misfit!

    We hear you!!! We've all been there, but during your introductory orientation you will have the opportunity to meet the Syracuse Martial Arts Academy office staff, as well as instructors and students. For years and on-going generations, our academy has been known for its 'family feel' along with a unique environment to personally prosper in. Therefore, joining the Academy is a truly great way to meet new friends who will encourage you and help you to stay motivated!


    7. Well, maybe I'm worried I'll get hurt!

    At the Syracuse Martial Arts Academy, we take all of the necessary precautions to keep you as safe as possible! It's one of our highest priorities. Rest assured classes at the Academy are always supervised by experienced, certified instructors. To add an extra safety measure, we always recommend that students wear protective gear to shield against injury from inadvertent contact. While safety equipment reduces risk and injury, there is no better way to foster safety than good control and common sense.


    8. I just don't want to make a commitment.

    What? Well, just what in life do you commit to? OK, let's be honest... For most, it's the things that serve them or that they're passionate about, right? -- We understand this also. And with some things, dreaded FEAR can even creep in! Above all else, we want you to make a commitment - one which allows you to see your highest potential and purpose. Then, to realize the rewards that can be achieved by letting us help see you through those commitments. Our diverse team understands that you can truly be what you want to become in life and having the things that count! Sure, we realize that everyone goes through hard adversities at times, but we're also wise enough to know that time waits for no one... Unleash the real you today! Really, just what are YOU waiting for anyway???

    9. BUT... I never stick to anything.

    There's that 'BUT' again... Listen, as with everything, good things take time and effort. --> In a word: PERSEVERANCE.

    Yes, some of the greatest historical leaders have known that the only way to become successful is through persistence and hard work. It's simple -- you can be a champion, IF you are willing to work hard and pay the price. Everyone wants to be a winner, but their desire is not great enough to motivate them to pay the price. Paying the price means spending the time and effort necessary to succeed! At the Syracuse Martial Arts Academy, our instructors provide motivation, encouragement and feedback to help keep you focused on all of your goals. But, y-o-u must take the first step.

  3. Will I get hurt?

    The chances of you getting hurt are very unlikely. In any physical activity there are chances that accidents may happen, but the likelihood of getting hurt while training in the martial arts is very low. We make sure all students understand the drill and make necessary corrections as the class progresses. You will never be required to do anything that causes you pain. Even when students injure themselves outside of class, they are expected to train at THEIR capacity. We train in a very safe manner. You are less likely to get hurt in here than you do playing other popular sports, like football, soccer, or basketball.

  4. Are you an MMA school?

    We are a mixed martial arts school, because our students have the ability to cross train, but we don't train for competition ring/cage fighting. Our students can cross train in several disciplines: empty hand combat, ground fighting, weapons training.

  5. Do kids and adults train in the same class?

    No. We have separate classes for adults, ages 14 and up, and kids 13 and younger.

    Kids classes are earlier in the day (4:45-5:30pm) and finishes before the adult class begins at 6pm.

  6. How do I know which class is for me?

    If you are not certain which class you'd like, try them all! Our Introductory Program allows you to try EACH of our classes for FREE before you make a decision.

    Check our Schedule to see which classes best fit your available times to train.

    Read the History of each class to learn more about each style.

    If you are looking for a good workout, then Grappling and Jeet Kune Do is a good place to start.

    If you want to learn all aspects of the martial arts (empty hand and weapons) then give Kali a try.

    If you would prefer a more traditional and structured workout, Wing Chun is the way to go.

    Really, the best thing to do is to come in and try it.

  7. Do you have a beginners class?

    New students join our school nearly every week. You won't be alone as the only beginner. The senior students in the class will help you and explain how our classes work. You will not be left on your own. Our students are very friendly and helpful.

  8. Am I required to wear a uniform?

    Yes, but it is very simple. Our school uniform is a T-shirt and a sash, both you can purchase right at the school. 

    Training shoes, that you wear exclusively at the school, are also necessary. No street shoes are allowed on the mats. These you can get at any sporting goods store. Wrestling shoes or cross-training sneakers work best for most people.

    We live in a world where we wear t-shirts and sneakers, it makes sense to learn how to defend yourself in what you wear.

  9. Do I have to participate in tournaments?

    Our school focuses on the real world, street application of the martial arts. Tournaments are more for show, with specific rules, referees, points & trophies. When you train for REALITY, there are no rules and no points and your trophy is that you get to go home, not the hospital.

    Our school does have affiliations with other reputable martial arts schools in the region and occassionally some of our children will participate, but "no" it is not a requirement.

  10. How do I get started?
